Silent Film Animation- WIP

WORKING TITILE: Speakeasy Spaniels

INSPIRATION: The Roaring Twenties, Prohibition, Speakeasies, Flappers, Alcohol, Silent Film, Black and White Animation, Dogs.

PLOT OUTLINE:
Opening scene- A man in a heavy coat walks up to a door in an ally way, looking shifty, he knocks and a man behind the door slides open a panel so you can see his eyes, the man in the coat lifts up the collar of his coat to reveal a pin, the panel slides shut and the man behind the door opens it up and welcomes the man in the coat inside. The door shuts and the camera pans down to a doggy door next to the main door. A dog walks up and does the canine equivalent of what the man just did to be allowed to enter the doggy door.

Next scene- Dogs of all breeds are seen at a bar drinking alcohol which is served to them by another dog. We follow the dog that we entered with in his act of ordering a drink and getting progressively more drunk as the film goes on.

Next scene- the drunken dog somehow manages to stumble his way into the human part of the speakeasy, where he stumbles around and causes havoc, especially on the dance floor.

Final scene- TBA

5 Written Concepts

Dog Puzzle Game-

I would create a 2-player (with 1 player option) puzzle game, inspired by the x-box arcade game Ilomilo. The game would feature stylized levels within “worlds” that would be inspired by different geographic regions of the actual world. The players would be dogs from the geographic region, for example; a West Highland white terrier and a Scottish terrier would be the playable characters in the Scotland/Highlands inspired levels of that particular world. The plan would be to include a few different worlds, like 3 or 5, each with 3 levels. The objective of the game would be to solve each puzzle using teamwork before advancing to the next level.

Silk-Screen Printed Scarves-

I would design art nouveau inspired designs to be silk screened onto fabric scarves. The designs will likely be in one color printed on a solid color scarf of a complimentary color. The designs will be of objects in nature, keeping with the art nouveau theme, and have organic patterning.

Silent Film Animation-

Design and create a silent era film inspired animation (in black and white, with dialogue cards, and the only sound being an orchestral sound track). The film will likely center around dogs in some way, that is yet to be decided. A simple flat 2D style reminiscent of early silent black and white cartoons will be used.

Poster of Drunk Dogs-

The idea would be to create a large-scale poster of dogs drinking, similar to the famous painting by C. M. Coolidge of dogs playing poker. The format would be a wide width and not very tall, so as to most easily showcase the individual characters. It is yet to be decided if the dogs will be anthropomorphized in any way, but they will be drinking a traditional/symbolic alcoholic drink from their country of origin (such as a dachshund drinking a stein of beer).

A Graphic Novelization of my Gypsy Story (working title)-

Either a short graphic novel based on the short story version, or a full graphic novel based on the (still ongoing) fictional story I have been writing for many years. The story is set in sixteenth century England and focus around a traveling group of rag-tag strangers who live as traveling musicians in a gypsy-like lifestyle during the rise of some of the worst gypsy persecution in England. The story lends itself to making an interesting graphic novel because there are so many characters that it would be nice to identify them visually, as well as many opportunities to draw the dancing in the story rather than describing it.

Grocery Store Item

My adventure to the grocery store lead me down the fruit and vegetable isle where I was confronted with a sale on pomegranates. The fruit instantly brought back memories of when I was a child visiting my Great Grandparents house in Taft, California. There house was surrounded with fruit trees, a fig tree and an apricot tree filled up the back yard, and the front yard was dominated by a pomegranate tree. I do not think I actually ate any of the pomegranates off the tree, as a child I preferred the taste of the apricots. Later in my life, after my Grandparents had passed away and the house sold, my middle school teacher brought in pomegranates for the class to taste while we were studying ancient Greece (specifically the story of Persephone and Hades). I greatly enjoyed holding one of the little seed things between the thumb and forefinger and holding it inside my mouth as far back as I could yet still close my mouth. I would then squeeze my fingers together, forcing the seed thing to burst, spraying juice over every square inch of the inside of my mouth. It may sound weird, but try it, it is a very cool sensation and it allows you to extract the juice without having to eat the seed itself.

Something Loved and Lost from my Childhood

***My tent was 101 Dalmatians not princesses, but I could not find a picture of it anywhere on the internet so this is at least the same shape. Mine was red and had dalmatians all over it. ***

I got the 101 Dalmatians tent for Christmas one year (I was either 5 or 6) while we were staying at my great grandparents house. When I woke up Christmas morning (in my 101 Dalmatians pajamas) the tent was fully assembled in the living room. I loved that tent, it was a place for me to go, no adults allowed, and imagine. For me the tent was a safe place to play imaginary games by myself without worrying about my parents watching me or ruining my fun. It was almost always set up, and I would drag it around the house and squeeze it through doors in order to find the perfect spot. I would sometimes zip my dog inside with me, she didn't like being confined very much, but I would make her stay and play with me until she would claw at the fabric walls. Sometime when I was in middle school my mother decided I did't want it anymore and gave it to my little cousin without asking me. My mother has a horrible habit of doing that and she gave away all my Disney VHS to my cousins a few years later. I have since of course bought them all back on DVD.

Someplace I Have Never Been

Library Elevator:
  • Standing and Waiting for the elevator to come down- Made me feel very awkward because the elevator is right by the front desk and I could feel people looking at me thinking "why is she taking the elevator? She isn't holding anything heavy and looks to be completely capable of taking the stairs. She must just be super lazy."
  • The elevator is very large for only one person- It is a very empty space with minimal decoration except for all the shiny metal side panels.
  • Very short elevator ride- Made me think "why didn't I just take the stairs? I didn't need this elevator."
  • The elevator is poorly lit.
  • Someone joined me on the way back down on the second floor. Silence.
  • When I reemerged from the elevator on the bottom floor- People around defiantly recognized me as just going up and coming back down for apparently no reason.
  • I felt very silly.
